I am walking because ... the St. Vincent de Paul Society, working in small cells of volunteers, meets need regardless of creed right in my own community ... we step in like family when family is tapped out or does not exist ... we call our clients Friends ... we help with that last bit to make rent, cover the utility bill, get the car repaired so you can get to work; as we say, "No Work of Charity is Foreign to the Society" ... we talk with people and help them find a better future ... we strengthen the safety net and help alleviate and prevent homelessness ... we circulated tens of thousands of dollars locally last year through your generosity and the need is ever present ... and because my great-grandfather, THOMAS M. MULRY, banker, New Yorker, and social work innovator, became the FIRST NATIONAL PRESIDENT of SVdP in the US in 1915. Will you join me? If you have ever struggled with how to help that homeless person at the corner, if you have ever contemplated what it would be like to lack financial security or suddenly have no roof over your head, if you have ever thought, "something should be done", do what Thomas M.
